The historic building in Zehdenick has a rich and varied history, dating back to the early Middle Ages. Its foundations have witnessed centuries of change, from a Slavic castle to a Renaissance palace, and finally to the charming half-timbered house we see today.
Early History and the Slavic Castle+
- First mention of a Slavic castle on the Havel island.
- The castle served as the starting point for a settlement and the town of Zehdenick.
- A Renaissance palace was later built on the medieval foundations (vaults in the cellar).
Renaissance Palace and Royal Ownership+
- In the possession of the von Arnim family.
- 1528 Elector Joachim I. and use as a hunting lodge.
- 1631 destruction of the building by the great town fire.
The Half-Timbered House and Later Uses+
- Approx. 100 years later, construction of a half-timbered building on the foundations.
- Eventful changes in ownership.
- 1809 in the possession of Chief Bailiff Klemming (it was to remain with them for more than 100 years).
- Later a boarding school and retirement home.
- 2001 - 2003 Restoration.
