Hauptwil Castle

Nursing home

Hauptwil Castle, a historic structure in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland, is an impressive example of the architectural manifestation of social status. Originally designed as a multifunctional building, it now serves as a nursing home and is a testament to its eventful history.

History+

In 1664, the Gonzenbach brothers acquired the judicial lordship of Hauptwil. As a wealthy merchant family, they had the castle built within a year to visibly demonstrate their social standing. The building served not only as a residence but also as the seat of the lower court and a business center. As early as 1667, an evangelical chapel was established in the cellar vaults. Further additions included the half-timbered house "Traube" in 1665 and the unique gate tower "Türmli" in 1670. A magnificent park surrounded the estate. After being sold to the Brunschweiler family in 1879 and another change of ownership, the Charitable Society of the Canton of Thurgau operated a domestic science school in the castle between 1919 and 1951. After outbuildings had already been used as a retirement home, the main building was also converted into a retirement home in 1953 after extensive renovation and restoration. From 2003, it expanded into a retirement and nursing home, and from 2004, additionally into a residential home for people with mental disabilities in the "Traube" building. Since 2008, "Ars vivendi" has also offered living spaces for older people with psychosocial or mild intellectual disabilities. On January 1, 2010, the di Gallo Group took over the castle from the Charitable Society of the Canton of Thurgau.
