Hammel Castle

Hammel Castle is located in the Hammel district of the city of Neusäß in the Augsburg district. The castle is owned by the von Stetten family.

Wolfgang Paler the Elder was enfeoffed with Hammel in 1550. Around 1550/60, he initiated a new castle construction. The building was presumably destroyed by the Swedes in 1648. The new owner, Raimund Egger, had the castle rebuilt. Paul III von Stetten married Raimund Egger's daughter, Anna Maria Barbara, which brought two-thirds of the castle into the hands of the Augsburg patrician family von Stetten. The remainder later fell to the family indirectly. In the mid-19th century, extensive renovations took place, and in 1891, according to the plans of the Augsburg architect Jean Keller, an extension of the east-west oriented wing (new construction) was carried out, as well as a renewal of the facade structure and decoration of the south gable with neo-Gothic battlements. Jean Keller designed the - here neo-Baroque - picturesque decoration of the large hall on the upper floor of the east building inside the castle. The beautiful family legend is linked to Keller's redesign, according to which in 1891 the new lady of the castle, Auguste Monika von Plessen, made her marriage and move into Hammel dependent on three structural improvements: a mural with her parents' castle Kurzen-Trechow/Mecklenburg in her future bedroom, an altana (demolished 1975/77) and a stepped gable.

An old maple avenue leads to the castle, directly to the square gatehouse above which the coat of arms of the current owners is affixed. Also noteworthy is the southeast tower of the castle wall, the so-called Malakow Tower, which is intended to commemorate the famous battle during the Crimean War at the Malakow fortress.
