Haltenbergstetten Castle

In the years 780 and 830, Niederstetten was first mentioned in a tithe dispute between Bishop Wolfgar of Würzburg and Abbot Ratgar of Kolster Fulda in the "Traditiones Fuldensis", the donation book of Fulda Monastery.

The history of Niederstetten is closely linked to the castle, now Haltenbergstetten Castle.

In 1340, Ullrich II of Hohenlohe-Brauneck sold Haltenbergstetten Castle to Margraves Ludwig and Stefan of Brandenburg, Dukes of Bavaria, sons of Emperor Ludwig. This purchase included permission to transform the market town of Haltenbergstetten into a city, with the rights to establish the ban, stock, and gallows.

In 1367, Emperor Karl IV renewed the city rights, with the same rights as Gelnhausen. The city was surrounded by a wall and moat. Defensive towers were erected.

Due to changes in ownership dictated by feudal law in the Middle Ages and later by inheritance, the Lords of Hohenlohe, the Counts of Castell, the Schenken von Limpurg, the Lords of Rosenberg and Hatzfeld (1641 - 1794), the Diocese of Würzburg, and from 1803 the Lords of Hohenlohe-Jagstberg followed one another.

The castle, built in 1416 by the Lords of Rosenberg, was rebuilt several times in the 16th century and completely renovated and expanded in the 17th century. It is still inhabited today by the princely family of Hohenlohe-Jagstberg.
