Halmstad Castle

Local Authorities

Halmstad Castle is a historic 17th-century structure located in the Swedish province of Halland. Originally built as a royal residence, its architecture is more reminiscent of a Danish country house than a grand palace.

History+

On the site of the current castle, a farm stood in the 16th century. This was acquired in 1595 by the Danish King Christian IV to serve as an official residence for royal visits to Halmstad, as the city was under Danish rule at that time. Between 1609 and 1618, the Danish king had the castle constructed, with the Dutch architect Willum Cornelissen overseeing the building. Following the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645 and the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, the province of Halland passed to Sweden. The castle then became the residence of the first Swedish Governor of Halland, Bengt Christoffersson Lilliehöök, and also served Swedish kings during their visits. In 1658, it was fortified and expanded into a fortress. Since 1770, the castle has undergone several restorations.
