Haldenwang Castle

Haldenwang Castle consists of a three-story main building, as well as a later added octagonal tower and adjoining outbuildings. Renovated in 1860 in the Neo-Gothic style, the castle thrones on a mountain spur high above the municipality of Haldenwang in the district of Günzburg. The castle today houses seven apartments.

The origins of the castle date back to the 15th century. It was built around 1480 and came first to the Lords of Knörringen in 1502 and finally to the ancient noble family of Freyberg in 1515. In 1860, the castle was renovated by Rudolph von Freyberg-Eisenberg in the Neo-Gothic style. The actual castle building is oriented from north to south and has two extensions to the west, forming a horseshoe shape. The outbuildings were connected to the manor house by the added octagonal tower. To the left of the main building is the library wing, behind it the chapel accessible from outside, under which the crypt is located. Both wings enclose a bastion. The entire castle complex is surrounded by a large park and partly by a castle wall.

The castle served as a residence for the noble family until the end of the Second World War. In 1945, the US Army occupied the area. Soon, however, it was used as a home for displaced war invalids. In 1984, the castle was renovated and converted. In addition to the rented apartments, a number of representative rooms are still available for public use today (Knight's Hall, Library, Mirror Hall, etc.). The Neo-Gothic castle chapel can be rented for religious ceremonies.

The castle is owned by the baronial family von Freyberg-Eisenberg.
