Haimhausen Castle

Haimhausen Castle is located in the municipality of Haimhausen in the district of Dachau. The complex was first mentioned in a document as a castrum in 1281.

After a fire during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was rebuilt in 1660 and has been continuously expanded since then. Under Imperial Count Karl Ferdinand Maria von und zu Haimhausen, a major renovation was carried out by François de Cuvilliés the Elder from 1743 to 1749. A special jewel within the castle since then is the late Baroque castle chapel Salvator Mundi with stucco work and altars by the Flemish artist Egid Verhelst and his sons, as well as the ceiling painting by Johann Georg Bergmüller, which was created in 1750.

The organ of the castle chapel was built in 1736 as a positive organ by the organ builder Quirin Weber (Dachau) and is, with the exception of one stop, preserved in its original state. The organ case was supplemented with rocaille carvings in 1750. The purely mechanical instrument has 8 manual stops (Gedeckt 8', Gamba 8', Principal 4', Flöte 4', Octav 2', Quint 1¹/₃', Mixtur III 1') and a Subbass 16' as a pedal stop.

At the end of the 18th century, through female inheritance, ownership and the castle passed to the Counts of Butler-Clonebough (later Butler-Haimhausen). At the end of the 19th century, the local industrialist family Haniel – later ennobled – bought the estate. James Eduard von Haniel had the old Rococo castle expertly renovated and converted into an English country house by Max Schultze, the architect of Prince Thurn und Taxis. In 1997, the Bavarian International School bought the castle.

Haimhausen Castle is not open to the public for viewing.
