Early History and Ownership Changes
Hagenwil Castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century. The Lords of Hagenwil are also mentioned for the first time during this period. Rudolf von Hagenwil is said to have participated in Frederick II's crusade and later to have donated a large part of his property to St. Gallen Abbey. In the following centuries, the abbey appointed various feudal lords to the castle, such as the von Breitenlandenberg or von Paygrer families. In 1504, the Lords of Bernhausen were the owners of the castle. During the Thirty Years' War, it was plundered by Swedish troops.
Transformation and Modern Ownership
In 1684, Abbot Gallus had the castle converted into a summer residence for the abbots; the year 1741 on the main gate refers to this. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1806, the then administrator Benedikt Angehrn bought it. Today, it is in the seventh generation of family ownership.
