Guteneck Castle

Guteneck Castle consists of a three-sided complex on Gothic foundations. The residential wing with the castle chapel of St. Catherine was originally built in the 14th/15th century and was altered at the beginning of the 19th century. The two-story arcaded courtyard of the castle was added in the late 19th century. The associated manor, a three-sided complex, additionally consists of a former Swiss house with ground-floor vaults from the early 19th century. The former brewery from 1571 was rebuilt in 1822 (half-hipped roof building).

Guteneck Castle was first mentioned in the 12th century. In 1278, Guteneck Castle came into the possession of the noble family von und zu Murach. In 1299, a Jordan von Murach was first officially documented. In 1576, Wolff Albrecht von Murach sold Guteneck Castle to the Barons von Kreith. The Barons von Kreith were elevated to the status of Imperial Counts in the 17th century and, like their predecessors, held Guteneck for 300 years. The last Imperial Countess Franziska von Kreith (being childless) sold Guteneck Castle with its manor in 1894 to her brother, Count Franz von Spreti. In 1923, Count Spreti sold the estate again to a broker from Nuremberg, who sold the property in 1937 to Hereditary Prince Leopold von Coburg, Saxony and Gotha. In 1961, Albrecht Graf Beissel von Gymnich acquired Guteneck Castle from the Duchess of Coburg, Saxony and Gotha and gave the estate its current appearance. Burkhard Graf Beissel von Gymnich took over the property from his father Albrecht in 2001.
