Gurtweil Castle

Gurtweil Castle is located in the Schlüchttal valley in the village of Gurtweil, a district of the district town of Waldshut-Tiengen in the Baden-Württemberg district of Waldshut.

It is a large, simple box-shaped building, extending over three floors and featuring stepped gables at the ends. The predecessor building was the provostry of St. Blasien Monastery from 1646. The former castle, surrounded by moats, burned down on May 13, 1660. Within four years, St. Blasien Monastery built the complex that still stands today. Between 1720 and 1747, further alterations and additions were carried out, including an orangery (today's castle chapel), fruit and flower gardens, and a large barn. The interior decoration was very magnificent, and it was probably during this time that the beautiful Renaissance tiled stove was built. After the dissolution of St. Blasien Monastery, the castle was sold and also served as a military hospital.
