Gundersdorf Castle

To be privately owned

Gundersdorf Castle is a former manor house in the village of the same name on the Görtschitztal Road (B 92), which today belongs to the municipality of Magdalensberg in Carinthia. The building received its current form in the mid-18th century and is a protected monument.

The village of Gundersdorf first appears in a deed of gift in 1245, at which time the name Hundre(i)nsdorf was still in use. However, no stately building is found here, so it is likely that only a farm or an agricultural estate existed here over the centuries. In the mid-18th century, Anton von Dreer expanded the main building into a manor house, whose exterior has not significantly changed since then.

The castle, situated in an extensive park at the foot of the Sechzigerberg, is a representative, two-story building on a horseshoe-shaped floor plan, with two short side wings adjoining a long central section. The southern facade of the building is broken by basket-arch arcades in the central part and crowned by a triangular gable with a clock. The four arcades on the ground floor are open, the six on the upper floor are glazed. The windows of the upper floor are framed and have pediments. The small windows of the dwarf story above indicate that this floor formerly served as a grain storage. Rustications are applied to the corners of the side wings. The side wings each have two windows on the front and five on the outer sides, while the unadorned north side of the building has a total of eleven window axes. In the vicinity of the castle are farm buildings and a small chapel built at the end of the 18th century.

The estate has been owned by the Horner family since 1964 and is used both for agriculture and as a guesthouse.
