Gümligen Castle (Muri)
Gümligen Castle, a significant country estate from the 18th century, is situated on an artificially created terrace in Muri near Bern. It is distinguished by its original architecture and harmonious integration into the landscape.
History+
Between 1736 and 1739, Beat Fischer von Reichenbach, a postmaster and builder of the 18th century, had Gümligen Castle constructed. Parts of an older late medieval predecessor building were integrated into the design. As early as 1742, Fischer sold the property to Samuel Tillier after building the neighboring Hofgut. From 1922 to 1998, the castle was owned by the von Tscharner family, serving as the residence of General Henri Guisan between 1939 and 1941. In 1998, the castle's furnishings and valuable paintings were auctioned off by the previous owner. In 2000, Willy Michel acquired the castle, the park, and the surrounding foreland, thereby ending a period of uncertainty.
Location+
Gümligen Castle is located in Muri bei Bern in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 585 meters above sea level.

Today, Gümligen Castle is privately owned. The cubic structure with its high hip roof and differently designed sandstone facades is a striking feature. Particularly noteworthy is the central projection on the south side with its arched doors, balcony, and triangular gable. The interiors are representatively designed, featuring precious paneling, stucco ceilings, parquet floors, and marble fireplaces. The original park grounds have been preserved in their essential features.
