Großropperhausen Castle

It is located in the middle of an extensive and still agriculturally operated estate complex with a 4-hectare park and farm buildings, immediately west of state road 3152 from Schwarzenborn to Frielendorf.

The elongated, two-story building with a hipped roof is prominently situated in the center of the estate. The farm buildings are located to the right and left of the spacious entrance area to the estate and form a "U" with the castle.

The building dates from 1832. It was built by the Lords of Baumbach, who in 1698 bought three quarters of the castle and court of Ropperhausen from the last male descendant of the Ropperhausen line of the von Gilsa family and in 1719 also acquired the remaining quarter from his heirs. The new owners renovated and fortified the farmstead located in the southeast of the village between 1711 and 1724 and then built the small castle in 1832. The old castle was no longer used after its sale to the Lords of Baumbach, but was partially demolished and gradually fell into disrepair.

The castle seat, which the Lords of Baumbach acquired with the purchase, comprised in 1783 two farms with 410 Kassel acres of land, 300 acres of meadows, 30 acres of garden, 10 acres of fallow land, 300 acres of coppice wood, common pasture and wasteland, and 1,350 acres of forest. Also included were the inn "Zum toten Ochsen", a brewery, a poorhouse, the court servant's residence, and the castle mill. In 1895, the estate district comprised 130 hectares of arable land and gardens, 60 hectares of meadows, 79 hectares of common land, and 148 hectares of forest.
