Grossau Castle
Grossau Castle is a Renaissance castle in the southeast of the village of Grossau (municipality of Raabs an der Thaya, district of Waidhofen an der Thaya) on the Moravian Thaya.
Originally, there was a castle west of the village above the Thaya. This was first mentioned in a document in 1204. In the 15th century, it fell into disrepair and is referred to as a desolate fortress in a document from 1574. In the 16th century, a moated castle was built in the village of Grossau, in whose farm buildings the first agricultural school in Lower Austria was established in 1856 by the Barons of Villa-Secca.
On August 29, 1914, the empty castle, owned by Imperial Councillor Natonek, was requisitioned by the district administration of Waidhofen an der Thaya under the War Services Act to establish the Grossau internment camp. During this time, the original owner sold the castle to the owner of Raabs an der Thaya Castle, Baron Robert Freiherr Klinger von Klingerstorff. This change of ownership also necessitated the relocation of the camp hospital established here to the Drosendorf internment camp. Among those interned in Grossau camp was James Joyce's brother, Stanislaus Joyce, who had been transferred here from the Kirchberg an der Wild internment camp. Around 1930, the unused building was restored.
Today, the castle is used commercially.
Description+
The castle is a small, four-winged late Renaissance complex. The building is surrounded on three sides by moats. The renovated facades with cornerstones and corner fascias in the plaster probably date back to the late 19th century. A mighty, square, slightly raised tower with a tent roof is inserted in the recessed southwest corner. On the east side there is a baroque terrace. The complex has extensive farm buildings, a two-story, two-winged residential wing with an early historicist facade from around 1860, and a two-story, locally framed granary with wide windows and a half-hipped roof from the second third of the 19th century.
