Groß-Siegharts Castle

The castle is first mentioned in 1304 with Weichart auf dem Siegharcz. However, the modest knight's seat was probably built in the 12th century by a local noble family, who belonged to the retinue of the Counts of Raabs. Cotsrelve von Siegharts is presumed to be the builder.

The dominion initially changed hands quite frequently. In 1530, it belonged to Christoph von Greißenegg, who carried out various alterations and additions two years later. Further works, which served to improve living comfort and defensive strength, took place between 1570 and 1580 under the Welzer family. From 1681, Siegharts was in the possession of the Counts Mallenthein. The transformation into the present-day castle was carried out by Johann Christoph Ferdinand Graf Mallenthein in the years from 1710 to 1720.

In 1731, the dominion came into the possession of Count Karl von Sinzendorf. Between 1795 and 1808, it was owned by the Grosser family, then by the van der Straaten family. In 1860, a textile factory was established in the castle. Finally, the municipality of Groß Siegharts bought the building in 1891 and set up its administration here from 1897. In the 1980s, the now city municipality had the building extensively restored. It still serves as the town hall today.
