Grombach Castle
Grombach Castle is a former moated castle from the 13th century in Grombach, a district of Bad Rappenau.
In the 13th and 14th centuries, the moated castle was built by the local nobility and then came into the possession of the Lords of Helmstatt as a fief. Erhard von Helmstatt († 1514) sold the village with the castle and sovereign rights in 1498 to Stephan von Venningen († 1530) from the Neidenstein-Zuzenhausen line of the Lords of Venningen. The castle was severely damaged in 1504 during the War of the Landshut Succession and possibly also affected again during the German Peasants' War in 1525.
Description+
Grombach Castle, located at the southeastern end of the village, was created by alterations from a moated castle that possibly already existed in the 13th century. The round defensive tower, which is connected to the main building by a curtain wall, dates back to the old castle complex. The main building, a Gothic residential building with four floors, and the octagonal stair tower with a Rococo coat of arms of the Venningen family were newly built by 1544 and later renovated several times. Next to the manor house is the administrator's house, an elongated two-story Baroque building with a gate passage and coat of arms. Further outbuildings adjoin it. The moat, which has long been filled in, is only faintly recognizable.
