A castle in Grohnde from the 13th century was first mentioned in a document in 1421. In 1557-59, the three-story expansion of the castle took place under the Droste Jürgen von Holle. After this, the castle was owned by Stats von Münchhausen. In 1651, the north and east wings were added. The castle was an administrative bailiwick and is now a domain.
