Gröbern Castle

Anyone driving on the district road from Zell a. Harmersbach to Unterentersbach will see the centuries-old Gröbernhof, a free noble fiefdom, first mentioned in a document in 1222. In the tower, the Schlösslin, which is still preserved today and was formerly surrounded by a moat, rampart, and walls, once lived the Knights of Sneyt. The Knights of Sneyt-Gröbern died out in 1582.

In the course of its eventful history, the castle and estate then came into the possession of Imperial Count Johann Friedrich von Meyershofen - ennobled by Emperor Leopold I - who restored the estate, which had been severely dilapidated by the wars.

He had the actual Gröbernhof, which is still preserved today, torn down to its foundations and rebuilt it larger and longer. The castle tower got its present shape. The coat of arms and the year on the front of the Gröbernhof indicate 1699 as the year of construction. The von Meyershofen family owned the estate until 1836. In that year, the last of the line died out and the Gröbernhof passed to the bourgeois heir, Johann Heinrich Fischer, and then to his children. In 1862, the estate had to be sold for economic reasons. As a commercial object, it changed hands once more and was finally acquired in the same year 1862 by the Kraichgauer Adelige Damenstift. To this day, it owns the largest part of the land area, which Golfresidenz Schloß Gröbernhof KG has leased to build the golf course.

The name "Gröbern" probably comes from an Alemannic burial ground that is said to have been located there.
