Gripenberg Castle
Gripenberg Castle, located in the historic province of Småland near Tranås, is a remarkable structure in Sweden. It is considered the largest wooden castle in the country and impresses with its unique construction and long history.
History+
The construction of Gripenberg Castle took place in 1663. It was originally built as a hunting lodge for Carl Gustav Wrangel. Wrangel presumably named the castle after his mother's maiden name, Margareta Grip. Although the architect of the castle is not definitively confirmed, Nicodemus Tessin the Elder is considered a possible builder. A preserved wooden model of the castle, which was likely used in its planning and design, is now housed at Skokloster Castle. Already by the end of the 17th century, the estate changed hands and was acquired by Commercial Councilor Samuel von Söderling.

Today, Gripenberg Castle remains in private ownership and is not accessible to the public. The historic building is a protected monument and continues to be inhabited by the heirs of Samuel von Söderling.
