Greng Castle

The origins of Greng Castle (formerly Grein) date back to the 18th century. At that time, the Murten doctor Jean Frédéric von Herrenschwand bought the manor house there, which was then given to Francois-Claude Gigot von Garville, the royal rider and general administrator of the territories of the King of France. The latter commissioned a Fribourg architect, Karl von Castella, to replace the old manor house with the current castle. The works, which included in particular the establishment of an extensive French garden, lasted from 1785 to 1787.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was acquired by the Pourtalès from the Neuchâtel branch; Jules von Pourtalès undertook some changes and had it enlarged. Later, the residence became the property of the French Desmolands family. In 1893, it came into the hands of Emile-Louis Roussy.

In the 20th century, the castle was luxuriously restored and remained private property. The old park is currently one of the rare building zones in the municipality of Greng.
