The origins of Gråsten Castle date back to the early 18th century when it was constructed between 1700 and 1708 for the governor of the royal territories in Schleswig and Holstein. A devastating fire in 1757 destroyed large parts of the complex, but reconstruction began as early as 1758. During this process, the facades were designed more simply than before. Since 1935, the castle has been used by the Danish royal family as a summer residence, a tradition that is continued to this day by Queen Margrethe II.
