Granhammar Castle

Granhammar was first mentioned 1299. 1344 the manor was owned by the Uppsala Cathedral. In the 15th Century the manor was owned by Arent Persson (Örnflycht), who was a close friend of Gustav Vasa. Thereafter, the property transferred to the Rosencrantz, Soop, Wachtmeister, Fersen, von Lantingshausen und Rålamb.

The castle was built from 1748-52 by Baron JA Lantinghausen on the walls of an old manor house dating from the 16th Built century. It was designed by architect Carl Harleman. In the 19th Century made several reconstructions. 1933 the family Rålamb had to sell the castle at economic reasons. The new owner was the family Nathanson. In 1961 the property was sold to the HSB Stockholm. They wanted to build a new suburb of Stockholm in this area. In 1964 the property was expropriated by the state, just to build a military training area. The castle stood empty since then. The financial resources for the renovation of the castle were missing. Therefore, it should be demolished. After extensive protests was the demolition of the castle stopped and it was declared a national monument.
