Gradisch Castle

Gradisch Castle is a Renaissance building erected in the mid-16th century in the village of the same name, south of the municipality of Feldkirchen in Carinthia.

A medieval noble residence may have stood on the site of the present castle, which is also indicated by the current name, as Gradisch means something like "Burgstall," a place where a castle once stood. If this was the case, this original building was probably named after the noble family "Paradeis" residing there. The Paradeisers were ministeriales of the Carinthian dukes and can be traced back to 1192, when Wernhardus de Paradyso was mentioned as a witness in a document. Their residence was first mentioned in a document in 1250, but it is not certain whether it was a castle on the site of the present Gradisch Castle or Burg Prägrad. In the 14th century, the family's trace initially disappeared.

In 1550, Ferdinand I granted Georg von Neuhaus-Paradeiser the "Burgfrieden" (castle peace) for his newly built residence Gradisch. Eva Regina Paradeiser sold the castle in 1652 to the Salzburg Vice-Dom Johann Freiherr von Platz. In 1729, Polykarp Josef Graf Platz sold the dominion to Johann Anton from the secundogeniture of the Counts Goëss. Gradisch was converted into a fideicommissum and is still owned by the Goëss family today. The building is a protected monument under 34215!
