Goldenstein Castle

The exact period of Goldenstein Castle's construction is not documented, but it is presumed to be around 1400, based on historical records and stylistic comparisons. An attribution to the Lords of Campanif in 1271 is also possible. From the 15th century onwards, Goldenstein is historically verifiable. The castle's name is often associated with gold panning along the Salzach river, but Franz Hörburger described it as a typical castle name without a direct link to the precious metal. The first verifiable owner was Hans von Haunsperg in 1417. After several changes of ownership, the castle came into the possession of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter in 1710. In 1877, the abbey handed over the estate to the Augustinian Canonesses, who used it as a convent and educational institution. Since 1897, the Order of the Regular Canonesses of St. Augustine of the Congregation of Our Loving Lady has owned the complex. In the 18th century, Goldenstein also served as a place of recreation, including for Michael Haydn.

Goldenstein Castle is located in Elsbethen, in the Salzburg-Umgebung district, in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria. It stands at an elevation of approximately 423 meters above sea level.

Today, Goldenstein Castle houses a private girls' secondary school run by the Augustinian Canonesses and is therefore not publicly accessible. The complex consists of a distinctive eight-story main building, complemented by two-story wings and a chapel built in 1926/1927. An inner courtyard with a fountain from 1598 characterizes the ensemble.
