Göksholm Castle
Göksholm Castle, a historic complex on the southern shore of Sweden's Lake Hjälmaren, has been privately owned since its inception and is known as the place where the leader of the Engelbrekt Rebellion met his end in 1436.
History+
The origins of Göksholm Castle date back to the 13th century, when it resembled more of a fortress with a prominent tower. During the Middle Ages, the building underwent transformations in six phases. After a fire at the end of the 16th century, the castle was modernized in the Dutch Renaissance style, incorporating larger windows among other changes. Despite these alterations, the medieval structure of the edifice remained discernible. A well-preserved ceiling painting with 121 coffers also dates from this period. In the 17th century, a curtain wall with portals was erected around the castle, supplemented by wings that no longer exist today. A roof alteration in 1801 was the last major structural measure before a restoration around 1950 uncovered older details.
