Gliwice (Gleiwitz) Castle
The so-called Gliwice Castle, also known as Piast Castle, is a historical structure located on the edge of Gliwice's Old Town. Although it bears the name castle, it was not originally a ducal residence but evolved from parts of the medieval city fortifications.
History+
The origins of the current building date back to the 14th century, when the city wall of Gliwice was erected. In the 16th century, a section of this wall, along with a defensive tower, was expanded into a residence for the city lord Friedrich von Czettritz, resulting in the Gothic stone and brick building. Over the centuries, the structure served various purposes, including an armory, a prison, and a farm. Before 1945, it was known as the Stockhaus (prison). At the end of the 1950s, it underwent renovation and reconstruction, during which the building received a tower. Since 1959, it has been part of the Gliwice Museum.
