Gevelinghausen Castle
Gevelinghausen Castle is located in the Gevelinghausen district of the town of Olsberg in the Sauerland region (NRW).
The castle, built by the Knights of Gevelinghausen, was first mentioned in a document in 1299. In 1299, the Count of Arnsberg exchanged the Gevelinghausen manor with the Meschede Abbey for the Ostwig manor.
In the 17th century, the castle chapel, which already existed in 1543, was rebuilt. In 1796, Baron von Wendt-Papenhausen acquired the castle. The poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff stayed as a guest at the castle in 1824 and 1831. In 1872, Conrad Freiherr von Wendt was born at Gevelinghausen Castle. In 1985, the estate was sold by the von Wendt family for economic reasons. In the following years, the new owners leased the castle to the Verwaltungs-Berufsgenossenschaft, which established a training center here, and a castle hotel was also created.
Architecture and Description+
From 1371, the house was fortified. The large half-timbered building, clad with sandstone slabs, was covered with a mansard hip roof. The three-story central risalit is dated 1810. The main floor of the tower-like, square corner buildings from 1810 was decoratively slated. On the extensive forecourt, there is a crenellated gate tower in the portal axis. The south and east wings were built towards the end of the 19th century. Behind the manor house, a small landscape park with ponds has been laid out. The administrator's house, located to the southeast, is a single-story half-timbered house with a mansard hip roof; it was built at the beginning of the 19th century and extended to the west towards the end of the 19th century.
