Genthod Castle
History of the Castle+
The old Genthod Castle was originally constructed by the Lords of Gentoux and currently houses the town hall of Genthod.
From Manor to Castle+
The first mention of a fortified house in Genthod dates back to the 12th century. It was then a simple manor, probably made of wood, belonging to the Lords of Gentoux, a powerful family of the region. Over the centuries, the building was expanded and reinforced, gradually transforming into a stone castle.
The Castle under Bernese Rule+
In 1536, Bern conquered the Pays de Vaud and with it, Genthod. The castle then lost its military importance and was converted into an administrative building. It served as the residence for the Bernese bailiffs, who managed the region on behalf of Bern. During this period, several modifications were made to the castle, including the addition of larger windows and more comfortable living spaces.
From Private Residence to Town Hall+
After the departure of the Bernese in 1798, the castle became private property again. It changed hands several times and was used as a country residence by various wealthy families. In the early 20th century, the municipality of Genthod acquired the castle to convert it into its town hall. Extensive renovation work was carried out to adapt the building to its new function while preserving its historic character.
Architecture and Features+
Genthod Castle is a fascinating example of medieval architecture, characterized by its robust stone walls and defensive elements. Over the centuries, however, it has undergone numerous modifications that reflect the changing architectural styles and functions of the building.
Medieval Origins+
The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century and are characterized by their thick stone walls and small, slit-like windows. These elements clearly show the defensive function of the original building. The castle was probably surrounded by a moat and equipped with a drawbridge, although these features are no longer visible today.
Renaissance and Baroque Influences+
During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the castle was significantly modified to meet the needs of its aristocratic residents. Larger windows were added to allow more light into the interior, and the living spaces were made more comfortable. Some decorative elements from these periods, such as ornate fireplaces and ceiling paintings, are still preserved today.
The Town Hall Today+
Today, Genthod Castle presents itself as a harmonious blend of medieval robustness and later architectural refinements. The exterior is dominated by its impressive stone facade and the characteristic tower, which offers a panoramic view of Lake Geneva. Inside, the historic rooms have been carefully restored and now serve as offices and meeting rooms for the municipal administration. The large council hall, with its high ceilings and elegant furnishings, is particularly noteworthy.
Current Use and Events+
Today, Genthod Castle is the administrative and cultural center of the municipality of Genthod. It houses the town hall and is also a venue for various events.
Town Hall+
The castle serves as the official seat of the municipal administration. Here, citizens can take care of their administrative matters, from registering their residence to applying for permits. The mayor's office and the various municipal departments are also located in the castle.
