Gampelen Castle

The "Herrenhaus" (Manor House)+
The so-called "Herrenhaus" (next to the Restaurant Sternen) was built in 1653 by Franz Ludwig Steiger. His widow, Anna Katharina von Jeoffrey (+ 1691), worked there as a doctor, and her tombstone is embedded in the north wall of the church. This magnificent, authentic house, which fit wonderfully into the village landscape, burned down on Repentance Day in 1969 and was unfortunately rebuilt in a rather imaginative, unattractive way.
