Gablingen Castle

Gablingen Castle is located in the Swabian municipality of Gablingen in the district of Augsburg. It consists of a high and a long castle and, together with St. Martin's Church, is situated high above the Schmutter on the edge of the Lech Valley.

In 1527, the Fuggers acquired the lordship of Gablingen, which bordered the lordship of Biberbach to the south, from Sebastian von Knöringen, along with the associated castle, which together with St. Martin's Church forms an imposing sight. The direct connection between the castle and the church testifies to the ecclesiastical and secular center of the former Fugger lordship of Gablingen.

The high castle, a narrow building with a steep gabled roof and oriel windows, contrasts its staircase tower, crowned with an onion dome, with the church tower. The church and the high castle were connected in 1596 by a brick passage. A terraced, walled castle garden is situated in front of the long castle, which lies below the high castle. Above the castle portal, the Fugger lilies can be discovered in the wrought-iron grille of a round window. Until 1889, the castle was owned by the Fugger-Babenhausen family.
