Gabelhofen Castle

Gabelhofen Castle is a moated castle in the Aichfeld region of Upper Styria. It is located in the municipality of Fohnsdorf, Austria.

Today, the castle is a four-star castle hotel with seminar facilities. It is located 200 meters from the Aqualux thermal spa.

The building was first mentioned in 1443 as Hof Riegersdorf, which belonged to the Liechtenstein dominion near Judenburg. In 1490, the estate passed to the Pfanngauer family, and the expansion into a Renaissance moated castle began.

After the extinction of the Pfanngauer dynasty, the castle passed to the Pranckh lords Catzianer and Galler. In 1494, the Liechtensteins reacquired the castle and granted it as a fief to the Prankh lords, who completed the renovation around 1536.

In 1596, the Gabelkhofner family bought the castle. This family dynasty came from Bavaria to Styria in the 14th century. Christof von Gabelkhoven received the fief over the castle from Carl Freiherr von Teuffenbach in 1597. In 1897, Prince Johann von Liechtenstein took possession of it.

In October 1994, the castle became a hotel.

Since 2000, the castle has been owned by the H.M.Z. Privatstiftung, founded by Helmut M. Zoidl. It is used as a hotel, seminar center, and art gallery.
