Fünfkirchen Castle

Schloss Fünfkirchen - or Schloss Steinebrunn - is located in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel, in Steinebrunn, 10 km north of Poysdorf, near the Drasenhofen border crossing and the town of Nikolsburg/Mikulov in South Moravia. The castle is prominently situated on a hill - the Schlossberg - with a wide view of the surrounding area.

The castle bears the name of the Lower Austrian noble family Fünfkirchen.

In 1602, Baron Johann Bernhard von Fünfkirchen had the four-winged castle rebuilt in the late Renaissance style as the center and administrative seat of his large estate. Remains of a late Romanesque predecessor building were integrated into the rising masonry. At the beginning of the 18th century, Count Johann Adam von Fünfkirchen had parts of the castle decorated in Baroque style; the stuccoed Sala terrena and remains of secco painting are still preserved. From 1800, the former fortifications were razed and an English garden was laid out. In 1809, Napoleon stayed at the castle. A last major renovation took place in the mid-19th century, when the four corner towers received a third floor and pyramid roofs. Towards the end of the Second World War, the castle was plundered.

The family crypt of the Counts of Fünfhausen is located in neighboring Stützenhofen.
