Fronburg Castle
The Fronburg (or Frohnburg) is located at Hellbrunner Allee No. 53 in Salzburg. More correctly, the old castle should be called Frohburg (from Old High German fro = lord). In history, it was also known as Grafenauerhof or Schloss Kuenburg and is a typical Salzburg country castle.
Built around 1620 as a smaller structure (small castle, pleasure garden, and dairy farm), it was initially owned by Baron Kuenburg, then Baron Froberg, and between 1670 and 1960, continuously by the Counts of Kuenburg. The castle's structure dates from 1670/80, when Johann Josef Graf von Kuenburg redesigned and expanded the castle.
In 1960, the Republic of Austria acquired the castle to adapt its premises for the Carl Orff Institute. Later, a student dormitory was added. To this day, the castle is part of the Mozarteum University.
The coat of arms cartouche above the entrance portal in the east still commemorates the Kuenburg era. The castle is surrounded on all sides by a high wall.
Castle Garden and Courtyard+
The castle courtyard is located on the west side of the castle (avenue side). The wrought-iron entrance gate on Hellbrunner Allee, flanked by gatekeeper's and gardener's houses on both sides, dates from the 17th century.
The castle with its once magnificent baroque castle garden faces east towards the Salzach. Of the baroque castle garden, two geometric garden ponds and the central fountain basin (likely buried by occupation soldiers around 1954, excavated and restored in 2000) are particularly well preserved. Also noteworthy is the wall fountain depicting a dolphin embracing a girl.
The once landscape-defining tree-lined castle axis into the Grafenau (also called Herrenau or Josefiau) is partially recognizable and is now designed as an asymmetrical sugar maple avenue. The former bridge in the castle axis over the former Eschenbach is now only partially visible and significantly impaired by a parking lot.
The revival of the Eschenbach, as well as the re-establishment of the baroque garden, has been considered multiple times; they would significantly enhance the Fronburg castle ensemble.
The Meierhof+
The old farm of the Fronburg dairy, located east of the castle park, is excellently preserved and has recently been used as a Montessori kindergarten.
