Who built the castle and when is unknown. In 1530, Siegmund Freiherr von Herberstein acquired it. In 1667, the castle was rebuilt. In 1856, it came into the possession of the Leoben citizen Anton Krempl, whose descendants (the Aubell family) are still the castle owners today.
