Fresenburg Castle

Fresenburg Castle, as we know it today, was built around 1850 on the foundations of an old castle.

The history of this impressive building complex dates back much further. The first documentary mention of a "Vresenburch" dates back to the 13th century. At that time, it was a strategically important moated castle that served to secure the ford over the Bärenbach and protect the surrounding lands.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. During the Thirty Years' War, it suffered severe damage and subsequently fell into disrepair for a long time.

In the mid-19th century, the then owner, Baron von Krosigk, decided to demolish the dilapidated remains of the old castle and erect a new, representative castle building in the Romantic style. The renowned architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase was commissioned with the planning.

Hase designed a magnificent building with turrets, battlements, and bay windows that perfectly blended into the picturesque landscape. The interior was also lavishly furnished and reflected the taste of the Wilhelminian era.

Today, Fresenburg Castle is privately owned and is used as a residential building. It is not open to the public, but its impressive exterior can be admired from the surrounding paths.

The castle is a listed building and is considered an outstanding example of historicist architecture in the region. It bears witness to a rich history and is a living monument to past eras.

The Castle Park

The castle is embedded in a spacious, historically designed park. Although the park is also privately owned, parts of it can be viewed from the outside. It contains old tree stands, winding paths, and picturesque views of the castle.
