Fremersdorf Castle

To be privately owned

Fremersdorf Castle, a historic complex in Saarland, stands as a testament to bygone eras. Located in Rehlingen-Siersburg, it boasts a rich history deeply rooted in the regional nobility.

History+

Fremersdorf's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it was the seat of a knightly family named after the locality. These knights of Frummerstorf bore a zigzag bar on their coat of arms, similar to the lords of Siersberg, Gerlfangen, and Hilbringen, indicating familial ties. In 1342, the lineage died out with Jakob von Fremersdorf. Subsequently, Fremersdorf became a village under two lords, the Dukes of Lorraine and the Counts of Saarbrücken, who shared sovereignty. In 1581, the Counts of Saarbrücken transferred their rights to the Duke of Lorraine. In 1613, the lordship of Fremersdorf passed to Baron Wilhelm Marzlof von Braubach. In 1622, he had a new castle built, which featured several towers with loopholes on its rear side. In 1629, he added a chapel to the castle wall, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. However, this chapel was destroyed during the French Revolution and demolished in 1797. In the same year, Gaspard Jean de Renauld had the upper castle torn down and replaced with a new two-story building with a mansard roof.
