Frederiksborg Castle

The origins of the present castle date back to the Middle Ages, when a manor house existed on this site, first mentioned in writing in 1275. In 1560, King Frederick II of Denmark acquired the then manor of Hillerødsholm and the surrounding lands. He had the manor expanded into a hunting lodge. However, the magnificent castle we see today was built under his son Christian IV, who was born in Frederiksborg in 1588. Christian IV had the old hunting lodge demolished and erected the new castle, named after his father, on three islands in Frederiksborg Lake. Since Christian V, the castle chapel has served as the anointing place for all Danish kings of the House of Oldenburg (with the exception of Christian VII) and is traditionally the scene of royal weddings. In the Knights' Hall of the castle, the Great Northern War was concluded in 1720 with the Peace of Frederiksborg. A devastating fire on the night of December 16-17, 1859, destroyed large parts of the main building. Thanks to the financial support of the industrialist Jacob Christian Jacobsen, the castle was completely renovated. In 1878, the Museum of National History was established here.

Frederiksborg Castle is located approximately 33 m above sea level in the city of Hillerød, in the Hillerød district, within the Capital Region (Hovedstaden) of Denmark.

Visitors can explore Frederiksborg Castle today, which functions as the Danish Museum of National History. Approximately 60 rooms display paintings and furnishings from various eras, collected from castles and manor houses across Denmark.
