Font Castle

The Lordship of Font belonged to the nobles of La Molière, who held it as a fief of the Lordships of Estavayer-Chenaux, vassals of the Duke of Savoy. When the city of Fribourg took possession of both the castle and the Lordship of Chenaux in 1485, they became the feudal lords of the Lordship of Font. In 1507, the Lords of Molière had to partially encumber their Lordship, then in 1520 sell it with all its territories and parts to Fribourg, who made it a bailiwick.

The manorial house, of which some ruins can still be seen on a steep cliff sloping towards the lake, belonged to the estates given by King Rudolph III to his wife Irmengarde in 1011. This act called it Castellum regale. In 1545 it had a chapel and even a chaplain. It was definitively destroyed.

Of it, after more than a thousand years, only a small wall on the molasse block remains today.

The bailiff's house is called "Castle" and was undoubtedly built on the old chapel of the castle and the old guardhouse. It seems that the wall on the lake side as well as the opposite wall inherited their fortifications from the "Dance Place". It is not impossible that the bridge connecting it with the cure and with the municipality of Châble also dated from this period.

Painted coats of arms adorn the ceiling of the bailiff's hall of the "Castle" Font: dating from 1642, the coat of arms of the Republic of Fribourg below: on the left the coat of arms of Bailiff Jean-Pierre Féguely, bailiff from 1638 to 1643, accompanied on the right by the coat of arms of Heinricher, undoubtedly Peter, the first bailiff simultaneously of Vuissens, Font and Molière from 1608 to 1613. If these were not alliance coats of arms (which would be surprising in an official hall like this), one could think that Féguely wanted to recall the origin and connections of his power with the series of coats of arms from the 16th century.
