Flaach Castle

Flaach Castle, a historic structure with a rich past, is located in the picturesque municipality of Flaach in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Originally emerging from a Kehlhof, it evolved over centuries into a representative castle, which today stands as a testament to its eventful history.
History+
The origins of Flaach Castle date back to 1264, when a Kehlhof "auf der Blatten" was mentioned, which later belonged to Töss Abbey and then to the Commandery of Bubikon. In 1298, Rheinau Abbey was granted jurisdiction. A significant development was the acquisition of judicial lordship by Ulrich von Fulach in the early 16th century, who had a new manor house built around 1520. This half-timbered building with a hipped gable roof was first referred to as the "House of the Fulach of Flaach" in 1527. After passing to Hans Peyer in 1571, a western extension with a masonry wing was added around 1580. The castle largely acquired its current appearance in 1612 under Tobias Peyer, who had the eastern transverse wing with a large hall built and redesigned the western extension. In 1694, Johann Rink von Wildenberg sold the castle to the Canton of Zurich, which administered the judicial lordship as an "Obervogtei". After being sold to the municipality of Flaach in 1780, the castle passed into private ownership and was used in the 19th century, among other things, as a blue dye works and tannery. Over the course of the 20th century, the castle changed hands several times and was designated a cantonal protected object in 1979.
