Fischhorn Castle

The origins of Fischhorn Castle date back to the Middle Ages, with an initial fortified building emerging around 1200. The complex was first documented in 1227 under the name Vischarn. The name likely derives from a natural barrier to the outflow of Lake Zell, which facilitated fishing. Over the centuries, ownership changed hands, including the Lords of Goldegg and later the Bishops of Chiemsee, for whom it served as a residence and administrative seat. In 1526, during the Peasants' War, the castle was plundered and set on fire, suffering significant damage. After a period of decay, a comprehensive renovation and expansion took place in 1675. With secularization in 1807, the castle became state property and housed various offices. In 1859, it was auctioned and acquired by Princess Sophie of Löwenstein and Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein, who had it rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style. A major fire in 1920 destroyed large parts of the castle, which was subsequently rebuilt in a simpler form. During World War II, it was used by the National Socialists as an SS base, before reverting to the Gildemeister family after the war, who still own it today.

Fischhorn Castle is located in Fischhorn, a district of Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße, in the Zell am See region of Salzburg, Austria. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 768 m above sea level.

Fischhorn Castle is currently privately owned and inhabited. It is in excellent structural condition. The castle is not open to the public but is occasionally used for events.
