Farrach Castle

The history of the building, often referred to as a castle, dates back to the 12th century. Originally, it was a fortified tower house, strategically located on a hill overlooking the valley. Over the centuries, this modest fortification underwent numerous transformations, reflecting the changing architectural styles and the varying fortunes of its owners.

In the late Gothic period, around the 15th century, the building was expanded into a more substantial residential castle. Evidence of this era can still be seen in the sturdy foundation walls and parts of the battlements. However, it was the Baroque period that truly left its mark, transforming the austere medieval fortress into a magnificent palace.

The Baroque transformation, largely undertaken in the 17th and 18th centuries, introduced grand facades, ornate stucco work, and spacious halls. The central courtyard, once a functional defensive space, was redesigned into a picturesque inner garden, complete with fountains and sculptures.

The Grand Hall

The Grand Hall, located on the first floor, is undoubtedly one of the most impressive rooms. Its ceiling is adorned with a magnificent fresco depicting mythological scenes, while the walls are covered with intricate tapestries. Large windows offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The Chapel

The castle chapel, consecrated in 1720, is a jewel of Baroque ecclesiastical art. It features a richly decorated altar, a finely carved pulpit, and several oil paintings by renowned artists of the time. Regular services were held here for the castle residents and their staff.

The castle has seen a succession of noble families as its owners, each leaving their unique imprint on its history and architecture.

The castle was built by Johann Zöttl. Later, ownership passed to the Counts Seilern.

The Zöttl Family

The Zöttl family, prominent local nobility, were responsible for the initial Baroque expansion. They invested heavily in the modernization and beautification of the castle, turning it into a symbol of their wealth and influence.

The Counts Seilern

The Counts Seilern acquired the castle in the late 18th century and continued the tradition of patronage. They added further wings and extensively renovated the interiors, introducing elements of Neoclassicism. Their extensive art collection, much of which is still preserved, greatly enriched the castle's cultural heritage.

Today, the castle stands as a proud testament to centuries of history and architectural evolution. It is open to the public as a museum, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the lives of its former inhabitants and the artistic achievements of different eras.
