Falkenhof Castle (Rheine)

Perhaps the most significant building for Rheine is the Falkenhof, the so-called "seed cell" of the city. The architectural and archaeological monument from the 9th century was completely renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, it houses the City Museum. The exhibition is divided into three areas: City History, Print Cabinet, and the Kasimir Hagen Collection.

The City History section displays finds from prehistory and early history, but primarily exhibits from the city's often warlike past. Armor and weapons, for example from the Thirty Years' War, document Rheine's military history. In addition, this part of the presentation is dedicated to local artists, including nationally renowned names such as Carlo Mense and Joseph Krautwald.

The Kasimir Hagen Collection, named after the Cologne art collector Kasimir Hagen, includes paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as sculptures from the 15th to 19th centuries. In 1964, the first pieces of this collection were bequeathed to the city, before further exhibits were transferred here from Bonn in 1987.

The Print Cabinet also stems from Kasimir Hagen's philanthropic activities. The collection, comprising more than a thousand objects, includes works by well-known artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, and Max Liebermann.
