Ernegg Castle
Ernegg Castle is located in the cadastral community of Ernegg in the Lower Austrian market town of Steinakirchen am Forst. The castle is used as a hotel and is located at the address Ernegg 1.
Initially, a castle belonging to the Hofmark Steinakirchen of the Bishop of Regensburg stood on the building site of the castle in the hamlet of Ernegg. In the 16th century, a four-sided castle with a projecting corner tower and an arcaded courtyard with a protruding stair tower was built on the castle plateau with a steeply sloping embankment leading to the Kleine Erlauf. The builders were Wolfgang von Oedt zu Götzendorf and his descendants from 1527, and Reichart Streun von Schwarzenau from 1596. From 1656 until today, the castle has been owned by the Counts of Auersperg.
Castle Complex+
The four-sided, three-story building with a hip roof and partly with dormer windows has its main entrance with a round arch in the west. The facades are varied and mostly irregularly structured according to their construction period. In the southwestern corner, the chapel projects to the south and is terminated by a round tower. The chapel with a cross-rib vault is mentioned in documents in 1330 and was consecrated to Saint Bartholomew in 1675. The inner courtyard is askew and has three-story arcades on three sides with trompe-l'œil wall paintings and a southwestern staircase. On the north side, there are no arcades, and a round stair tower is presented in front of the inner courtyard facade.
Landscape Garden+
West of the castle is a 19th-century landscape garden with an access avenue lined with spruce trees. An obelisk commemorates Joseph Graf von Auersperg, who fell in the Battle of Austerlitz.
