Ermsleben Castle

Ermsleben Castle is located in the town of Ermsleben in the Harz district. It was built in 1590 in the Renaissance style.

At the site where the castle stands today, there was formerly a moated castle of considerable size. The castle was probably built in the 14th century; in any case, it was first mentioned in documents in 1332. Its builders were the Lords of Konradsburg, who later called themselves Counts of Falkenstein.

In 1332, Count Burchard of Falkenstein gifted the medieval castle to the Bishopric of Halberstadt. In 1530, the castle came into the possession of Chancellor Christoph Türck. After Christoph Türck's death in 1547, Elector Moritz of Saxony took over the moated castle of Ermsleben. 20 years later, the Bishopric of Halberstadt pledged Ermsleben and thus also the castle complex for 60 years to the Lords of Hoym.

In 1590, the two-story castle was built on behalf of the Lords of Hoym. The moated castle was completely demolished and the entire castle grounds were built over. From 1712, Ermsleben Castle and the nearby Konradsburg were used for agricultural purposes. Today, part of the castle is used as apartments. However, many rooms are empty.
