Engelsegg Castle

Engelsegg Castle (also known as Engelseck) is a castle complex built around 1500 in Steyr (Redtenbachergasse No. 9). Until 1642, the property was called Teufelsegg.

The exact construction date of Engelsegg is unknown, but the seat is already mentioned in the 13th century. The builder is probably the rich cloth merchant Hans Fuchsberger, who was also mayor of Steyr in 1525 and 1526. Josef Achtmarkt von Achtmarktstein (mayor from 1642 to 1645, † 1647) acquired the castle in 1641 and rebuilt it in Renaissance style. In 1642, he applied to Emperor Ferdinand III for the renaming of the residence from Teufelsegg to Engelsegg. The former name Teufelsegg was derived from the partly underground Teufelsbach (Devil's Stream).

In 1667, Mattheus Riess was in possession of the castle; the Riess von Riesenfels family remained in possession of the castle until 1726. Johann Josef von Riesenfels was married to Helena Theresia Händl von Ramingdorf. Franziska von Rummel then followed in ownership. In 1783, Baroness Franziska von Rummel sold the property to Jakob Voith.

Further owners included: the Höger family, Josef Mayr (1835), then Josef Werndl, who also owned Rosenegg Castle. Through his daughter Anna, Engelsegg came to the Counts of Lamberg. Since 1918, the city of Steyr has been the owner of the property.
