Elbroich Castle

Schloss Elbroich is a former knight's estate located in the Holthausen district of Düsseldorf, which is now used as an office location for companies in the service and consulting sectors. The castle park is open to the public.

The origins of Schloss Elbroich can no longer be researched, as the Elbroich archive was almost completely destroyed by the effects of World War II. Around 1189, the Lords of Teveren sold the village of Düsseldorf, along with several estates, to the Counts of Berg, including the allod Elbroich. In the 15th century, the property passed to the Lords of Eller. On April 10, 1589, Georg von Neuhoff acquired Elbroich for the price of 6500 thalers. Around 1600, Elbroich was rebuilt, largely in the form in which it still exists today. In 1679, the castle passed by marriage to the Counts von der Horst. Some additions and alterations were made in 1748. The year on the gate entrance commemorates this period. When Nicolas de Pigage had the gardens of Schloss Benrath laid out in 1760, the Elbroich moat dried up because the feeding Itterbach was diverted to power the water features of the new electoral castle. In the 19th century, the park was expanded. In 1852, Katharina Trinkaus, the mother of the banker Christian Gottfried Trinkaus, bought Elbroich. Through marriage, the castle came into the possession of the Heye family, the founders of the Gerresheimer Glashütte. In 1895, Hermann Heye bought more land nearby and entered the real estate business. This developed into Industrieterrains Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG (IDR), which is now owned by the city.
