Ekholmen Castle
Ekholmen Castle is a historic structure near Veckholm in Sweden, boasting a rich history as a noble residence and now serving as a hotel. Its origins trace back to the 14th century, and it has undergone various transformations over the centuries.
History+
The first known mention of Ekholmen dates to around 1370, when Karl Ulfsson (Sparre) of Tofta was named as its owner. Later, the estate passed to Birgitta Stensdotter (Bielke), who was the mother of Sten Sture the Elder and Archbishop Gustav Trolle. In 1546, Ekholmen fell to the Swedish Crown. Just 25 years later, on July 27, 1571, Baron Pontus De la Gardie became the new owner. In the 18th century, the castle came into the possession of Lieutenant General and President of the Wismar Tribunal, Count Friedrich Christopher Dohna, and later his grandson, Lieutenant General Count Carl Fredrik Dohna (1721-1784). A significant reconstruction of the castle took place in 1746, followed by a renovation in Renaissance style in 1857.
