Ehrnegg Castle
Ehrnegg Castle is situated on a hillside southeast of St. Kollmann in the municipality of Griffen. The word "Egg" is an old term for field. Ehrnegg therefore means "field of ears of grain". In the Slovenian dialect, the estate is called Rzenegg. "Rz" is the name for rye, so Rzenegg stands for "rye field".
In 1158, an "Arnek" was first mentioned in a document. The existing Renaissance castle was built in 1586 by Eberhard Erdtl von Haimstatt, the Bamberg administrator of Weissenegg. Around 1660, the castle was owned by Neidhart Julius Freiherr von Staudach zu Freyenthurn und Ehrenegg. In 1670, Franz Graf von Dietrichstein acquired it and had the second upper floor redesigned in the early Baroque style with late Mannerist elements.
Count Polykarp von Christallnigg sold Ehrnegg in 1771 to Baron Franz Josef Kaiserstein. In 1774, the complex came into the possession of Baron Max Thaddäus Egger, and in 1886, to the Barons von Helldorf. In 1979, the pharmacist family Edgar and Lieselotte Piskernik acquired the castle and had the Baroque garden reconstructed.
Architectural Description+
The stately three-story, six-axis Renaissance building stands on a rectangular floor plan. On the valley side, the castle has two diagonally placed corner towers, and on the hillside, two bay-like projecting corner towers. Above the rustic portal on the east facade, the double coat of arms of Dietrichsteiner-Paradeiser, dated 1673, is affixed in oval cartouches. The central axis on the second upper floor is accentuated by round-arched triforium windows from the Renaissance period.
In the northeastern room of the first upper floor, a carved and painted beamed ceiling from the time of construction (16th century) has been preserved. The continuous central hall of the second upper floor features a stuccoed mirror vault from the end of the 17th century. Furthermore, the hall contains parts of a Renaissance fireplace with herm pilasters from the construction period.
In the walled, reconstructed, historic garden, there are two hexagonal, tower-like garden pavilions with remnants of early Baroque architectural decor.
