Ehrenhausen Castle

Presumably in the 11th century, the Carinthian dukes had a fortification built at this strategically favorable location above the Mur crossing. Around 1100, the Sponheimers gifted Ehrenhausen to the Benedictine monastery of St. Paul in Lavanttal. In 1240, the castle Ernhus was mentioned for the first time as the place of issue in a deed of gift.

The castle was usually given as a fief, for example around 1260 to Friedrich von Pettau, who in turn entrusted burgraves with its administration. These named themselves after Ehrenhausen from 1285. In 1360, the Pettau fief reverted to the monastery, but they received it back a few years later. After the extinction of the Pettauers, the Schaunbergers inherited the lordship in 1441.

In 1543, Georg Graf Schaunberg sold the castle to Christoph von Eggenberg. He and his son Ruprecht greatly expanded the castle due to the constant threat from the Turks. In 1755, Ehrenhausen passed by inheritance to the Counts of Leslie. They gave the castle its final form. In 1804, the Counts Attems became the lords of the castle. From the 19th century onwards, the owners changed quite frequently. From 1904 to 1915, the complex was owned by Archbishop Dr. Theodor Kohn of Olomouc.

In the 20th century, the Barons von Salvi had the buildings thoroughly restored. Even today, the castle is privately owned and inhabited. The current owner is Ms. Ingrid Csicsaky. The castle courtyard was last restored from 1971 to 1973.
