Egeskov Castle
Egeskov Castle is an imposing moated castle on the Danish island of Funen, which evolved from a fortified stronghold into an inviting country estate over the course of its history. Surrounded by extensive gardens and home to several museums, the building stands as a significant cultural monument.
History+
The construction of Egeskov Castle was completed in 1554 under Frands Brockenhuus. He married Anne Tinhuus, who brought her parents' original farm into the marriage. In view of the political turmoil, the Reformation, and the civil war between 1534 and 1536, many large landowners of that era decided to design their estates as difficult-to-capture fortresses. Brockenhuus followed this trend and had the castle built in the middle of a lake. According to legend, the foundation was built on so many oak piles that an entire oak forest was sacrificed for it, giving the castle its name Egeskov (Oak Forest).
